The Royal Pier Hotel with the adjacent Toll House, frames the entrance to the famous Grade 1 listed Clevedon Pier. The two buildings, both designed by Hans Price, form a picturesque and architecturally coherent group unchanged since 1869. The Grade 2 status of the Hotel reflects its relationship to the Pier.
Since 2001 the Hotel has been the subject of a long-running campaign by a group of committed local protesters to prevent its whole or partial demolition and replacement by an inappropriate block of flats out of scale with its surroundings.
In 2009 the building was acquired by Freemantle Developments of Bristol. A new design to convert it into flats, smaller in scale and retaining many original features, was submitted to North Somerset Planning Authority, together with a design for a much-needed Visitor Facility for Clevedon Pier. Planning permission for the Hotel was granted on 4th March 2011 and for the Visitor Facility on 7th April 2011.
